The Best FREE Progress Monitoring Assessments in Reading for Students with Learning Disabilities in Reading

Picture
An intervention focused on a single component of reading is not as effective as an intervention that is comprehensive of all reading skills.

So what does this mean for how we teach reading students with learning disabilities in reading???

This means that our interventions should target all 5 pillars of reading:

Phonemic Awareness
Phonics
Fluency
Vocabulary
Comprehension

And this also means...

Our students with reading disabilities should be progress monitored in all 5 areas of reading also.

So how do I progress monitor my students with learning disabilities in reading???

For Phonemic Awareness, I use...

PAST to measure students' abilities.

For Phonics, I use...

Quick Phonics Screener, CORE Phonics Survey, or DIBELS: Nonsense Word Fluency to measure students' abilities.
For phonics (word reading) and encoding, I use the WIST (this one is not free, but can be found HERE.)

For Fluency, I use...

DIBELS: Letter Naming Fluency, Word Reading Fluency, or Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) to measure students' abilities.

For Vocabulary, I use...

CORE Vocabulary to measure students' abilities.

For Comprehension, I use...

DIBELS: Maze, Cloze Measures, or the CUBED NLM to measure students' abilities.
